IMAGES of Great Yarmouth’s transport heritage are set to brighten the area around the £630,000 Vauxhall Bridge restoration project.

The mural has been made possible thanks to a £2,000 Fair Shares grant - and local people can contribute their designs at sketches at Vauxhall Station on Saturday.

From 10-4pm, local artist Matthew Harrison will be working to create a transportation timeline of Great Yarmouth history as part of the Big Draw - a national event that aims to bring out everyone’s inner artist.

People are invited to draw for five minutes alongside Mr Harrison who said the proposed community mural would brighten the area around the station and enhance the refurbishment of Vauxhall Bridge.

Norfolk County Council project manager David Wardale said the 20-week project would begin on the Eastern span on November 5 with the first four weeks taken up removing old decking. It will mean some closures on the river.

He said officials were talking to Greater Anglia to find the best locations for the murals he hoped would rival those by street artist the Silent Hobo, whose colourful depictions of key points in Yarmouth’s cultural life brightened hoardings around St Georges Theatre and had a positive impact.

The aim of the artwork was to engage people with the project, brighten the site and link with the Big Draw initiative.

The event is a free drop-in activity and open to all ages and abilities with all materials provided.

There are over 1,000 national Big Draw events taking place across the UK throughout October, including at Great Yarmouth’s Time and Tide Museum, to promote drawing.
