Two Coastguard teams covering the north Norfolk shoreline are hoped to soon be joining forces by moving into new “fit for purpose” premises.

Mundesley and Happisburgh Coastguard look set to come together in a new station situated between their two areas, as negotiations are currently ongoing for the lease of an existing building near Bacton.

The teams are hoping to move to the more appropriate base as Happisburgh’s current premises off Beach Road is due to be demolished due to fast eroding cliffs, and Mundelsey’s building dates back to the 1900s.

They are now looking to take over and convert the building on North Walsham Road in Pollard Street, which is within a mile from the coast.

Fred Caygill, spokesman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, said: “We’re very pleased that negotiations are taking place to establish a new station to continue to serve the Mundesley and Happisburgh areas, with a building that will be fit for purpose and will provide a first rate facility for our Coastguard rescue teams.”

The volunteer teams are expected to become known as Bacton Coastguard but each team will still cover their respective areas and there will be two response vehicles based at the new station.

It is also expected to house North Norfolk sector manager Tony Garbutt, who is now on the look out for more recruits to join Coastguard teams across the area.

He said: “We are looking for reliable volunteers who are in search of a challenge. They need to be able to work as part of a team and live within a ten minute drive of the new base in Pollard Street.”

Recruits must also be over the age of 18 and hold a full driving licence.
