Norwich North MP Chloe Smith will chair the parliamentary meeting at Westminster and has invited MPs from Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex to discuss rail services.

With new train operator Abellio due to replace National Express East Anglia in running Greater Anglia services from next month, Miss Smith has been leading a campaign to ensure the new provider is aware of what passengers in Norfolk want.

She said: “It’s part of the campaign I am leading to improve the London to Norwich rail service and I am pulling together MPs from across Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex to invite them to campaign jointly on securing a more reliable service, with a better quality of stock and faster journey times.

“This won’t happen overnight and it’s a long-term campaign, but it is important that we work together to ensure improvements for everyone who uses the train in this area.”

Network Rail, the company which is responsible for rail infrastructure and signalling pledged this week to work closely with Abellio when the new franchise starts.

David Higgins, chief executive of Network Rail, said: “Working more closely with the train operators, with decision making devolved to the frontline and better aligned incentives, will, I believe, bring substantial benefits.

“The alliances will deliver a better service for passengers and freight users and at lower overall costs to the taxpayer.”

Ruud Haket, managing director of Abellio Greater Anglia, said: “A key part of service delivery will be the provision of operational information for staff and customers to help them make decisions during times of disruption.”
