Whistleblowers should be provided with protection and support for raising concerns about wrongdoing in public services, an MP has said.

As a member of the House of Commons’ public accounts committee, South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon was involved in investigating the role of whistleblowers across health and other government services.

“When whistleblowers feel the need to speak out, it is often in order to protect the public,” Mr Bacon said after a report published yesterday revealed cases where those who try to raise concerns are often bullied or harrassed.

“When a public servant wants to raise concerns, it should be straightforward to do so. In reality, the public sector’s haphazard approach has left people still feeling scared.

“Potential whistleblowers know that those who have come forward with legitimate concerns have sometimes been mistreated and even systematically victimised.

“In theory, many departments have improved their whistleblowing policies but the civil service culture does not encourage those with concerns to speak up. Moreover, Whitehall’s inconsistent approach to whistleblowing has left one-third of civil servants not knowing how to raise a concern under the civil service code.

“The civil service attitude to whistleblowing must change. The Cabinet Office should provide clear leadership to ensure a consistent whistleblowing policy across Whitehall.

“This must provide protection and support for whistleblowers, clamp down on those who victimise whistleblowers and develop a clear picture of the issues raised so that important lessons can be learned.”

  • Wait till someone blows the whistle on something in South Norfolk and see Richard Bacon leaping to their defence and making himself unpopular with the ghastly officers of his own Association? You will be waiting a very long time, if not ever. Ingo is right. Those decent people who observe what is going on throughout Norfolk have completely lost trust with those who are supposed to be those we have to trust most.

  • Why was David Wrights immense payments not a local story, why did it only make the national news? Free speech is all very well, but when its drowned out by multiple and amplified obfusecation and lies to the contrary, free speech is worthless. I support this action and would like to take it to the ultimate action, i.e the removal of all freemasons in public service, their split loyalties need exposing, its not just a feminist issue but one of decency and openess which is needed to regain the trust we have lost, especially in Norfolk.

  • why has the edp printed this post on whistleblowers . Whistleblowers need free speech to expose cover ups . The same applies to bloggers . Why have this post when you deny people their free speech to comment

  • this is a country who tells the world it has democracy and free speech . There are many cases where people have been victimised and threatened because they have exercised their basic right to free speech . Take the case of bnp leader nick griffin who exposed child grooming . He was taken to court and threatened with jail for exposing the truth . This country is no better than many third world countries when it comes down to free speech
