A mother and daughter from Hales Green have signed up to trek 160km to the Simien Mountains in Ethiopia as part of the 25th anniversary of the Send a Cow charity.
The extreme challenge will see Carolyn Salisbury and her daughter Clare, trekking about 20kms a day for eight days, up and down mountain passes at about 12,000 feet.
The pair, who have supported the charity for a number of years, heard about the trek as part of the charity’s anniversary celebrations.
Clare, 25, said: “I ran the Norwich half marathon for the charity last year and when we found out they were doing this trip me and my mum decided we were up for the challenge.
“We are really looking forward to it. I’m feeling a bit apprehensive just because of the altitude and because I’ve never done anything like this before. But it has been quite nice getting ready for it with my mum.”
The Send a Cow charity works with families in Africa to provide livestock and training in natural organic farming practices alongside courses in gender equality, conflict resolution and more.
As part of the trip, both women will get the opportunity to visit one of the charity’s projects, and they will also be climbing the country’s highest mountain Ras Dejen.
Clare said: “After following a charity for a long time it’s nice to think we can do a bit more for them and getting to go to one of the countries where they help is just amazing.”
Both women have been doing extra shifts at work to pay for their trips, and together they have raised more than £1,600 for the charity.
In a final attempt to raise awareness, the pair borrowed Loddon’s donkey pantomime costume and walked the streets of Norwich on Saturday handing out information about their trip.
Clare said: “When we were putting the outfit on in the car park I thought what are we doing, but it was amazing. So many people were smiling and coming up to us. The kids loved it and it raised a lot of awareness about the charity.”
The pair will be flying out on Wednesday and will be part of a team of 15 trekkers.
