A new exhibition of contemporary art inspired by the theme of monument and conflict is opening in Norwich.
Monument: Aftermath of War and Conflict is at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, with a second exhibition opening in June in the Undercroft, under the city's war memorial. The shows are linked to exhibitions in France, and the series marks the 100th anniversary of World War One and the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings.
Monument was chosen as a theme, because the word exists in English and French, and the French partners are Musée des Beaux-Arts, in Calais, and the FRAC (Le Fonds régional d'art contemporain Basse Normandie) in Caen.
Dr Veronica Sekules, deputy director of the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, said: 'The brief to the artists was a very open one, they were not required to concentrate specifically on the two wars being commemorated, but to think about the qualities and associations of the monumental, and about how dramatic and violent events might stimulate imposing structures. Alternatively, they could consider the relationships between private memories and public expression.'
Works on display include miniature replicas of formerly censored official monuments re-made in soap, huge imaginary monuments, detailed drawings relating to the lengthy siege of Leningrad during the Second World War, and a representation of Edwin Lutyens' Whitehall Cenotaph.
