Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has said he does not believe the election of Donald Trump will have any bearing on the future of the US Air Force base RAF Mildenhall.
Speaking during an election campaign visit to East Anglia he said: “I am meeting with General Mattis today and we shall discuss this – but I’m not aware of any suggestion of a change in policy.
“We shall do all we can to support the communities impacted. There is a great deal that can be done to promote the growth of business areas as well as releasing more housing for the public.”
The US Department of Defense made the decision to close RAF Mildenhall, home to the 100th Air Refuelling Wing and more than 3,300 airmen, in 2015.
The base is tabled to close in 2023, with 15 European US bases closing in total. RAF Mildenhall is the largest to close.
