As snow has continued to fall on Great Yarmouth this afternoon urgent shoppers have been flocking to stores and supermarkets.

And while some have been keen to stock up on edible essentials others have been snapping up a sledge to take advantage of the wintery weather.

John Cheeks, customer service manager at Tesco in Caister, said that although customer numbers have decreased - due to transport difficulties - sales of essential items such as bread, milk, cheese and eggs had rocketed.

Shoppers have reported that businesses in other parts of the county have been running low on some produce as people stock up ahead of the poor weather forecast for the rest of today and the weekend.

Mr Cheeks confirmed the Caister branch was having difficulties re-stocking essentials but the store is expecting deliveries to continue as usual.

Other shoppers have been heading to Kerrisons toy store on King Street, Great Yarmouth to buy some alternative winter essentials.

Staff reported increase in sales of sleds after the snow hit yesterday evening. More sales are expected over the weekend, however the store has a limited supply available to customers.

The James Paget Hospital has also seen a small increase in the number of patients, although a spokesman said it was no more than they expected due to the weather.

The majority of hospital staff have made it in to work today with the exception of a few that could not find alternative childcare, due to school closures across the borough.

Around three inches of snow has fallen across the borough but traffic has not been too disrupted. Side roads are still slippery, but the main roads through Yarmouth are clear.

Trains were disrupted earlier this morning, with some services not stopping at Acle or Lingwood, but are now back to normal.

Heavy snow is forecast to hit the county later this afternoon and temperatures are not expected to reach more than 0C.
