A new DVD showing the life and times of a former King's Lynn girls school has gone on sale.

West Norfolk and King's Lynn High School for Girls documents two periods of the schools history with films from 1937 and 1964.

The films were found by Michael Walker when researching for a book on the high school.

'There were boxes of books and papers, old photos and old slides in store cupboards in Springwood. I went looking for anything to do with the Girls' High School. In there I found these two 16mm films,' said Mr Walker, former headteacher at King Edward VII in King's Lynn.

'I've always been keen on history so it fell to me to do research, after I retired in 2002, for the KES centenary. I kept going ever since.

'We had, in April last year, a book launch at Springwood High School. We held it in the old high school building we said we were going to show these films and give the oportunity to wander around the old high school building.

'There certainly are people around who remmber people in the films. Right at the end of the 1937 film there's a little tot of about four who had come with her mother to pick up her sister. When we showed the film a lady came up to me and said 'that was me'.

'Both of the films follow, to some extent, a day in the life of the school so it's interesting to see how it was then. The 1937 film shows a lots of different lessons so you get an idea of what it is like in the classroom. The 1964 film is in colour, it's much more outside. You have the girls at breaktime selling cakes and biscuits.

'One of them in particular, the 1937 film, has some really amazing images. What really got me was dry swimming, all the girls lying on their stomachs kicking their legs.'

The films proved popular with the former pupils with many asking if it would be possible to have a copy which led to the idea of making them more widely available.

'It's expensive, putting film onto DVD. We managed to get a grant from the Audrey Stratford Trust. They have effectively paid for the film to be put onto DVD and the time for editing.

'I don't get any royalties. It's pure interest and the pleasure I get from seeing other people get pleasure from it.

'As people get older you like to have memories of the past. I like to get as many reminisences as possible and weave them in with the history.'

The DVD West Norfolk and King's Lynn High School for Girls can be purchased from Waterstones in King's Lynn or Springwood High School for £9.95.

Mr Walker's next book will be on the Alderman Catleugh School which merged with the Girls' High School to form Springwood. Anyone who would like to sharememories of the school should contact Mr Walker at michael@walker75.plus.com or contact Springwood High School on 01553773393.
