It was an inspiring story which took the world by storm, proved a massive fund-raising success and was turned in to a box office cinema smash hit.
And now the Calendar Girls stage version is heading for Dereham.
The phenomenon came about after the tragic loss of a friend’s husband, which prompted a group of women of the WI in Yorkshire to pose nude for a calendar.
The rights to perform the stage play have only been made available for a limited period of time, with an automatic donation being made to Leukaemia Research with every performing licence granted.
Dereham Theatre Company has managed to be one of the groups to secure the show, which will be performed from May 8-11.
“The play is one of the best pieces of writing I have come across in a very, very long time,” said director David Rees.
“It takes the audience on a whole rollercoaster of emotion, it is utterly hysterically funny in places, and very poignant in others, because it speaks to and from the heart.
“The story has the ability to strike a chord with everyone who experiences it, either in the audience, or on and off the stage. I am delighted to have an absolutely wonderful cast of great actresses and actors (because yes, there are a few male roles) and everyone has risen to the challenge splendidly. It’s been a terrific experience, and I know that the audience, cast and crew will all love the play”.
The publicity pictures have now been done, all with the spirit of “fabulous concealment” which the play’s author Tim Firth intended.
In addition to the play, the company decided it wanted to raise more money to go directly to helping local cancer charities in and around the Dereham area, and they felt it was only logical to do so by producing their own calendar. Local businesses have kindly stepped forward to sponsor a month each in the calendar, each month featuring one of the cast, and proceeds from the sale of these will go direct to fund the fight against cancer and support those living with the disease.
Calendars will be on sale both at the show, and in the town.
Tickets for Calendar Girls are on sale from Monday, March 25 from Arnie’s Attic in Quebec Street, Dereham. Tel: 01362 691569.
They can also be bought online at http://www.dosoc.co.uk.
Shows will be on daily at 7.30pm, with a matinee on the final day at 2.30pm.
