The family fun day has been organised by the local churches since the 1980s, and the aim is to provide an affordable day-out in a safe environment with no admission fee.

Visitors enjoyed the fun fair and craft stalls, donkey rides, Punch and Judy, refreshments, BBQ, ice creams, entertainers and choirs.

While stallholders donate 10 or 15pc of their takings to the May Day Fund, the churches, St Thomas in Earlham Road, St Annes in Colman Road, the United Reformed in Jessopp Road, and St Peters Methodist give 100pc.

After expenses have been paid and, setting aside a small amount for next year’s event, any profit remaining is given to local charities.

Margaret Culley, who is on the May Day committee, said: “I don’t know the exact number, but there must have been hundreds of people coming through the gates. I think it’s the biggest crowd we’ve ever had. We have been doing this for about 25 years and it gets bigger and better every year.”
