A collection of maps showing Wymondham in the 1800s has been published into a book by the town’s heritage society.

Wymondham in the 19th Century in Maps has been compiled by five members of the group, in a project which has spanned seven years.

“We started in 2008, but we only meet once a month and there are five of us involved, so it’s a long process,” said Mary Garner, one of the five.

Now, with the books still hot from the printers, the team are looking forward to launching the finished product at their next meeting, on February 26.

It will feature sections of historic maps of the area, including the tithe and enclosure maps, and specially drawn ones detailing growth and change over the century in aspects including schools, churches, crime and public houses.

The book, which will feature explanatory notes alongside the maps, was published by the Wymondham Heritage Society.

Mrs Garner said: “If people want to know about the area they are living in, it is perfect for them.

“It is aimed at anyone who is interested in the history of Wymondham.”

She worked with John Ayton, Richard Fowle, John Herne and Mark Phillips on the project.

The Wymondham Heritage Society, a registered charity, runs the Wymondham Heritage Museum, on Norwich Road. Its members have written many books and pamphlets on the history of the town.

The museum is set to open for its 2015 season on March 2, with new displays featuring Wymondham’s shops and shopkeepers.

Their latest publication will cost £14, although can be pre-ordered now for £12.

It can be bought from the museum and bookshops.
