A man accused of walking into a Norwich cafe, producing an extendable baton and threatening the owner and his partner before smashing up a car has been found not guilty of the offences.

Luke Kett had been on trial at Norwich Crown Court charged with having an offensive weapon, a cosh, in a public place and criminal damage.

Kett, 25, of Woodward Road, off Mile Cross Road, Norwich, denied both offences which related to an incident at Nelson Internet Cafe, Nelson Street, Norwich on September 8 last year.

The jury of seven women and five men had heard the incident happened at about 5.30pm when the defendant was alleged to have walked in claiming he had 'CS gas on him' and 'produced an extendable cosh or baton', threatening the owner and smashing up a car outside.

But the jury unanimously found the defendant not guilty of both offences.

Earlier, Christopher Morgan, defending, said: 'The allegation is that on September 8 you attended in a high visibility jacket, a dust mask and threatened Michael Ricketts and his partner with the cosh.'

Kett said: 'It's not true.'

Mr Morgan said: 'Did you smash the windows in the car?'

Kett replied: 'No.'

Mr Morgan said: 'The first time you were aware of the allegation was when?'

Kett said: 'That night I finished work, got home, cooked my tea, eat my tea and then police knocked on the door and I got arrested.'

Mr Morgan said: 'You told the police you were at work.'

Kett said: 'Yes and I told them to drop in to Coast to Coast and check with my boss.'

The court heard that in March 2013 the cafe owner's brother had assaulted the defendant's mother - who he had been in a relationship with - and was found guilty by a jury in November last year.

Andrew Oliver, prosecuting, in cross examination put it to Kett that he had finished work before going to Nelson Street 'hell bent' on getting revenge on his mother's partner and smashed up his car.

Kett said that was not true and insisted he was at work.
