A man has been airlifted to hospital after a car was struck by a train at a level crossing in Suffolk.

British Transport Police (BTP) and the East of England Ambulance Service (EEAST) were called to the Bloss level crossing at Melton shortly after 10.30am today.

A man, believed to be the driver of the vehicle, has been injured and has been airlifted to hospital for treatment, however his injuries are not thought to be serious at this stage.

There were no other reported injuries on board the train, according to the BTP.

Jordan Wallace, a spokesman for Suffolk County Council, said: 'There was a call at 10.37am this morning alerting the services to a train crash on the A1152, Melton, at Wilford Bridge...A level crossing by the station.

'By the time the fire service got there someone had already been rescued out of the car that was hit.

'They have been taken to hospital for a precautionary measure.

'The station and the vehicle are safe.

'They are doing the clear up works at the moment.

'National Rail have stopped the train and car traffic going through there.'

BTP officers remain at the scene and are examining the circumstances which led to the vehicle being struck.

A spokesman for the BTP said there are likely to be extensive delays to rail services whilst officers investigate what happened, and bus replacement services may be needed.

Passengers are advised to check with Greater Anglia and National Rail Enquiries before travelling.
