The talent of the catering team at the James Paget University Hospital was on show at a special celebration dinner last week.
Chief executive Christine Allen hosted a “Come Dine with Me”-style meal to highlight the skills of the chefs and catering staff and guests included patients, staff representing wards and departments from across the trust, Peter Aldous MP, and members of the board.
A three-course menu was prepared using locally sourced fresh produce, cooked in-house. A version of the meal was also given as an option on the patient menu for the day.
In preparation for the dinner, Norfolk-born chef Gary Hunter, now leading the prestigious Westminster Catering College, visited the trust the day before to meet with JPH chefs, see how the menu had been devised and to offer some tips on presentation.
Mr Hunter said: “I have been really impressed by the menu that has been prepared and the skills of the staff who have devised the dishes.
“The flavours, the locally- sourced ingredients and the presentation of the food are a fantastic combination. I’ve been able to offer some ideas about how some of the dishes could be tweaked, but overall the standard is very high”
Hospital facilities manager Nichola Hicks said: “This was a really exciting opportunity for the chefs and team to showcase their talents and I’m really proud of what they have achieved.
“They have been really inspired by this event and relished the chance to do something a little different from preparing the 2,000 patient meals they provide every day. This has been a great opportunity to highlight how important hospital food is and the value of providing freshly prepared and nutritious meals to our patients.”
Chief executive Christine Allen said: “I regularly hear excellent feedback about our catering team and the food we provide to our patients. The meal was wonderful and I would like to thank everybody who attended and supported the event.”
