A family golf day and a fun football event for children have both been organised as a prelude to a day of activities on the seafront on Monday to mark the countdown to this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The baton will arrive in Lowestoft at 7.45am on Monday, with boxer Anthony Ogogo kick-starting the fun. He will carry the baton to Claremont Pier, to be greeted by the Mayor of Lowestoft, June Ford, and a fanfare of live music.

After a mass warm-up event on the promenade, it is hoped hundreds of people of all ages will take part in a community run, jog, walk, buggy push or toddle along the seafront.

This will be split into a community event – open to members of the public, sports clubs, and businesses – and a relay involving teams from local schools, with Anthony Ogogo carrying the baton in both.

The baton’s visit to Lowestoft will trigger a day of sporting activity on the beach involving primary school children in the morning, high school and college students in the afternoon and businesses in the early evening.

The event has been organised by a group involving Waveney District Council, Lowestoft Rising, Suffolk County Council, Lowestoft police, East Coast Community Healthcare (ECCH) and local sport and social clubs.

At 4.45pm, ECCH’s wellbeing team is running a workplace sports competition, and is encouraging local businesses to take part.

Each team should have seven members. For more information, contact Abi Howes on 01493 744419 or email abi.howes@nhs.net

Several community sports events have also been organised across Suffolk for this weekend. Tomorrow, a golf open day for all ages is being held at Rookery Park Golf Club in Carlton Colville from 10am to 4pm, and a football fun day is taking place at Barnard’s Meadow, from 10am to 11.30am, for boys and girls aged three to 13.

Encouraging people to get involved in the baton runs, Bruce Provan, Waveney’s cabinet member for tourism and economic development, said: “I hope that as many people as possible will sign up to take part and once again put Lowestoft on the map.”

After leaving Lowestoft at 9.30am on Monday, the baton will head to Newmarket, Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich.

Three pupils from St Mary’s RC Primary School in Lowestoft have been chosen to run with the baton as it arrives in Ipswich on Monday. George Norman, 10, Freya McCurdy-Kenny, 11, and Mark Matthews, 10, will run alongside Ipswich fitness enthusiast Ken Webb as he carries the baton into Christchurch Park.
