A Lowestoft supermarket has been granted permission this week to open longer and extend the time lorries can deliver goods - despite fears it would create a noise nuisance.

The Aldi store in Millennium Way has been granted permission by Waveney District Council to open an extra hour until 9pm between Monday and Saturdays and extend delivery time of lorries to between 7am and 10pm from Mondays and Saturdays and 9am to 5pm on Sundays.

Previously lorries could only deliver or pick up items between 8am and 8pm between Monday and Saturday and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

The council’s development control committee heard on Wednesday that people in the surrounding area had objected to the extension of delivery times as they fear they would be disturbed by lorries in the morning and at night.

Aldi says only two of three lorries would make any early or late deliveries if needed and the extension is part of plans to enhance the customer experience.

Members heard there was a noise problem with lorries reversing into the store from the main road when instead they could drive just straight into the site and turn around in its car park to make deliveries.

Paul Light, of the Carlton Colville Ward, said Aldi should write to all lorry drivers to get them to drive straight into its car park to make deliveries to mitigate any noise concerns.

Chris Green, area planning officer, agreed with the suggestion and said: “If good practice is followed there will be fewer complaints.”

Wednesday night’s committee also heard that no residents of Ailmar Close, which is nearest to the delivery site, had made no complaints as there was an acoustic fence at the store to prevent sound travelling.

Most noise complaints came from Grasmere Drive and Foxborough Road.
