Olympic bronze medallist Anthony Ogogo, from Lowestoft, has dived in the deep end to get through to the semi finals of a live television show.
The boxer, with his family in the crowds, won last night’s heat of the live ITV show Splash! which is fronted by diving star Tom Daley.
Ogogo, 24, who recently joined the professional boxing ranks, finished in second place on the leaderboard following the judges vote, with
22 out of 30 points.
Ogogo was the first of the 15 celebrities (four others in the heats last night including Donna Air, Dom Joly, Tina Malone and Linda Barker) in the whole show to attempt a falling backwards somersault dive from the 7.5m board.
Taking top spot on the leaderboard following the judges vote was Linda Barker, interior designer and TV presenter, who gained 25.5 points.
But “the power of the public vote” led to Ogogo winning the heat overall to progress to next week’s live semi final.
Upon being announced as winner, cries of Og Og O rang out around the crowds and a gracious Ogogo said: “I am chuffed obviously but I feel I have robbed Linda of the victory as she was great tonight.”
In the Splash-off dive however, Linda Barker progressed to the semi final after the judges voted her dive superior to that of Shameless actress Tina Malone.
Anthony and Linda now join comedian Omid Djalili, Benidorm actor Jake Canuso, sports star Eddie Edwards and Sky Sports presenter Charlotte Jackson in Saturday night’s live semi final.
