One of the city’s most popular weekends is finally here and with 45,000 visitors expected to descend into Norwich, this morning’s rain should not dampen spirits.
The Lord Mayor’s Celebration boasts one of the longest running processions outside of London and this year the Norwich Evening News and Eastern Daily Press float will be making its return with some familiar faces.
Four of the gorillas from last year’s charity art trail GoGoGorillas! will be on the jungle-themed float, created by Inline Events, Norwich-based event suppliers.
You can come and join in with the fun at the popular street procession from 5pm, starting from St Stephens Road - and do not let the early rain put you off.
Phil Garner, forecaster at Weatherquest, said today’s early rain is already starting to stop.
“By the time the procession starts I think there may be one or two small showers but the rain is starting to stop now,” he said. “This morning there will be cloudy skies but by mid afternoon the sun should be shining.
“It should also be dry for the fireworks tonight.”
The fabulous fireworks display takes place from 10.30pm, with Norwich Castle providing the backdrop to one of Norfolk’s most spectacular firework shows.
Other highlights from the day also include music and events around the city, including at Chapelfield Gardens, and the Lord Mayor’s 5km Road Race which starts on Agricultural Hall plain at 4.30pm.
Participants will run two laps of the traffic-free city centre track.
Our own coverage of this year’s celebrations is set to be bigger and better than ever before.
