Three kayakers were rescued off the north Norfolk coast last night - thanks in part to the lights on their mobile phones.

Wells inshore lifeboat was launched just before 8pm when the coastguard received a 999 call from kayakers who were uncertain of their position as darkness fell.

The crew headed towards Blakeney and eventually located the kayaks inside Blakeney harbour on the sand at Blakeney Pit.

At 8.30pm the lifeboat located them from the lights on their mobile phones which they used to signal the crew.

The lifeboat escorted them to Morston Quay where the local coastguard took over and drove one of them to pick their car up in Blakeney.

The lifeboat returned to station at 9.35pm and was re-fuelled and ready for service again at 10pm.
