David Pritchard, former chairman of Cromer Town Council, refused a request from new Sheringham mayor Patricia Brooks to wear her chain at this year’s Crab and Lobster Festival at Cromer in May.

The annual weekend festival was also held in Sheringham and is a joint venture between the two towns.

Cromer council donated £2,000 but Sheringham Town Council did not provide any money.

A letter from Mrs Brooks saying she was “disappointed” was read at Cromer council last night.

Mr Pritchard said: “I stand behind my position 100pc. There is nothing personal about my decision. My decision was taken against Sheringham Town Council. I don’t for the life of me see why council tax payers should fund an event that runs in Cromer and Sheringham, but Sheringham council provides nothing. I’m disappointed with Sheringham council.”

He said Mrs Brooks was a lovely lady and would make a wonderful mayor.

Council member Jim Bond said: “It is a shame Mr Pritchard feels so strongly about it and is winding up the situation.”

Members voted to write an “anodyne” response via a letter.
