A memorial football match in honour of a local legend and king of Norfolk sport Les King is expected to attract more than 100 players and raise thousands for a cancer support charity.

On Sunday, July 23, Wymondham Town Football Club will host the second Les King Memorial Football Match in honour of the former life president of the club and community hero, who died in February 2016.

Last year’s event raised more than £3,000 for the Star Throwers cancer charity, of which Les King was a patron.

Based in Wymondham, Star Throwers funds research into the cancer treatments and provides practical, physical and emotional support to people suffering from cancer and their carers.

With this year’s event set to include more players and coinciding with the Wymondham Carnival, organisers hope the event will be even more successful than the inaugural match.

Event organiser Mick Money said: “The event is a celebration of Les’ life. He did so much for so many - it’s only right his name be remembered.

“I think he’d be over the moon that something like this is taking place in his honour.

“We all miss Les. People loved him and Wymondham is a sadder place without him.”

Last year’s event saw four teams - two veteran teams and two under-35s teams - play two matches of 60mins each.

This year will see the addition of two Wymondham ladies teams, bringing the total number of players to 120.

With each participating player donating £10 to play, local businesses sponsoring teams and individuals donating raffle prizes, it is hoped the event will beat last year’s fundraising efforts by at least £1,000.

Events will commence at 11am, when the Wymondham Town clubhouse and bar opens.

At 11.29am players and spectators will hold a minute’s applause in honour of Mr King before the first match commences at 11.30am.

Gilly B’s Ladies will take to the pitch first to play Station Bistro ladies, followed at 1pm by Moneyproperties veterans vs APR Communications veterans.

Mitchell Building Services under-35s vs Alpha Homeworks under-35s will be the last match to take place at 2pm.

At 3pm competition trophies will be awarded, followed by the raffle draw.
