A schoolgirl who died after falling from a pommel horse during a PE lesson has been named locally as Trevyn Joslin.
The student, who was in year eight at Taverham High School, died on Tuesday a week after the accident at the Beech Avenue site.
Students were told yesterday that the girl had passed away and an increasing collection of flowers have been laid at the school.
Ron Munson, headteacher at Taverham High, paid tribute to the “sunny” pupil who was being treated at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.
He said: “It was with great sadness this morning that we told students and staff the heartbreaking news of the death of one of our year eight pupils. Everybody is deeply saddened and our thoughts are with her family and friends at this terribly difficult time.
“She was a sunny girl and a bright student who worked hard, played a full part in our school community and could often be seen around the school, getting involved in whatever was going on, and always smiling. She was a big part of our school and we are all deeply affected by her loss.”
Trevyn passed away at about 3.45pm on Tuesday, a spokesman at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge said.
Both staff and students are now being offered support to help them come to terms with what has happened.
Mr Munson said that support would continue over the coming weeks and months and they would be given “every opportunity to share their memories of their friend if they want to do so”.
Norfolk County Council’s critical incident team is at the school.
The authority has also informed the Health and Safety Executive of the pupil’s death.
The HSE, as well as health and safety investigators from the county council, had already visited the school following the accident last week and an investigation is under way.
Mr Munson added: “Police are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the pupil’s death on behalf of the coroner and we are assisting in whatever way we can.
“An inquest will be held in due course.”
The accident, at about 2.45pm last Tuesday, happened during a routine PE lesson at Taverham High.
The East Anglian Ambulance Service and the air ambulance both attended. The pupil was originally taken by land ambulance to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital but was later transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
