Lil Le Grice, who has run the Golden Star for more than ten years, spoke of her shock after a car careered into the side of the building on Friday afternoon.

The landlady said it was an “absolute miracle” that no one was injured in the accident that happened at about 4.30pm on the corner of Duke Street and Colegate, just before the evening rush.

She said: “I was serving behind the bar and talking to one of my regulars. The next thing I knew he was being launched across the bar, shortly followed by a car.”

“Everything was in slow motion and afterwards the pub was full of smoke and dust and everyone was confused. I was relieved everyone was okay. It was an absolute miracle that everyone came out unscathed.”

Fire crews from Sprowston and Carrow were called to the crash and two ambulances and an ambulance officer were sent to the incident. Two people were treated at the scene and given advice and a man was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Miss Le Grice said that she had not been able to get back into her pub since the collision and was waiting for the building to be declared structurally safe. She is also waiting for the insurance company to survey the damage.

“It is a great big hole, but that is bricks and mortar and can be mended. If it had been half an hour later, when we would have been very busy we would have had a lot of regulars standing or sitting there. It is just a building and can be fixed. Everyone is okay and my regulars are well and fit, which is the main thing.”

“We hope to get reopen as soon as possible. Hopefully by the weekend. We look forward to welcoming them back to the reopening party, which we hope will be really soon and well attended,” she said.
