Lakenham and Hewett Rugby Club celebrates 50 years

A Norwich rugby club is appealing for players, supporters and friends, old and new, to join a celebration of its 50th anniversary.
Lakenham Hewett Rugby Football Club will kick-off its fiftieth season of competition this weekend and will be celebrating with a barbecue on Saturday, September 15, which is the first of a series of events to be held throughout the season.
Kevin Maddams, chairman of the Swardeston-based club, pictured, said: “We would love to see all players, supporters and friends old and new, up at the club. Whether you were there for a few months, a season, or more seasons than you choose to remember, we would love you to come up and share your stories.”
The club is also planning a beer festival and a couple of dinners to mark the anniversary.
Mr Maddams added: “We are proud of our history and the all inclusive nature of the club, so if you have been part of that make sure you help us celebrate this year in style. Most importantly, we would love to see all of our friends at some time or other up at the club.”
The club started out life as two school clubs, one of which was Lakenham Rugby Club, which was formed in 1962, and the other which was called Hewett Old Boys.
When the schools merged in the 70s the clubs also merged and games continued to be played at the school before they moved to land in Whitlingham Lane, Trowse, where the ski slope is now based.
In the 80s, the club bought its Hilltops site in Norwich Road, Swardeston, where it has been based ever since.
Ian Forton, a trustee of the club who joined when he was 15 and it was first formed, said: “It has brought together so many people over the years and has been more like a social club than just a sports club.”
The club would like to hear from anyone with special memories, pictures or stories. Contact Kevin Maddams on 07850 519940.
