The Labour Party have revealed their candidate in Waveney for next month’s general election.

Sonia Barker has been selected as Labour’s prospective parliamentary candidate for Waveney.

Mrs Barker is now in the running to be the district’s next MP, and she will be trying to overturn Peter Aldous’ 2,408 majority from 2015.

Having lived in Lowestoft for almost 30 years, and taught at high schools in Lowestoft and Beccles as well as working for the NHS, Mrs Barker is leader of the Labour Group on Waveney District Council – a position she has held for three years. She is married with a daughter and is also standing in this week’s elections for Suffolk County Council. Mrs Barker said: “It is really important that someone who really knows the area and the needs of local residents can represent it in Westminster. As a champion for young people in Waveney, and having recently listened to people on the doorstep, residents are really concerned about when the Third Crossing will actually be built, whether it is fully costed and when traffic congestion in Lowestoft will improve.”
