A 20 year-old man who drunkenly groped a woman outside a nightclub in King’s Lynn has been given a four month suspended custodial sentence and an 18 month ban from going to the nightclub.
A 20 year-old man, who groped a woman outside Chicago’s nightclub, in King’s Lynn, has been given a four month suspended custodial sentence and an 18 month ban from the nightclub by a judge who said his behaviour was “wholly unacceptable”.
Samuel Bowden had earlier been rebuffed by the woman when he approached her on the dance floor but then at closing time, Norwich Crown Court heard that he had approached her again as she waited outside with friends and groped her.
Andrew Shaw, prosecuting, said the sex assault had left the woman in tears and distressed and nightclub security staff apprehended Bowden and police were called.
Mr Shaw said Bowden said he had no recollection of what happened and said that he had been drinking that night.
“He did not know if it was true or not, but said if he had done it he was very sorry.”
Mr Shaw said that in her witness statement, the victim said the assault made her feel “horrible and dirty.”
Bowden of Fenland Road, King’s Lynn, admitted sexually assaulting the woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons.
Juliet Donovan, for Bowden, said that he was very remorseful for what happened. She said he suffered from depression and was immature for his age.
“This was an out of character offence.”
Sentencing Bowden and placing him on the sex offender’s register for five years Judge Nicholas Coleman told him that he accepted the incident was short-lived and not the most serious but said: “This was an assault which happened in a public place and it was seen by others. It caused considerable distress to the complainant.”
“This sort of conduct is wholly unacceptable in this day and age, not just from drunken young men but any man who thinks it is acceptable to grope females. It is quite unacceptable.”
He also ordered Bowden to do 180 hours unpaid work.
