Binmen in West Norfolk are considering strike action over a pay dispute.

The GMB union is organising action among workers from the Kier Refuse Service, who carry out bin collections on behalf of Kings Lynn and West Norfolk Council.

The company is said to have made a final offer of a 1.75% increase in pay over a period of 15 months, in response to a demand from the union of 4% over 12 months.

A GMB statement also talked about a further dispute over Kier refusing to pay compensation to blacklisted workers, stating Kier lost a building maintenance contract in Islington over failure to settle compensation.

Glenn Holdom, GMB Regional Officer, said “The company response is not acceptable to our members and they view this as the straw that has broken the camel’s back.

“GMB remain committed to talk further with the company to avoid regrettable disruption to the service our members provide but the company need to improve the offer and address the other concerns of members.”

In a response to the GMB, PR officer at Kier, Jane Mason, stated that the company aim to reach an amicable conclusion over the pay dispute to avoid any disruption of service.

She also stated that the Islington contract ended because of operational issues and that the industry would benefit from clarity and union support to engage with people working in the construction industry up to 2009, who might have been blacklisted without their knowledge.

She said: “We welcome any support to help raise awareness of the scheme to give anyone affected choice about seeking compensation. Full information is available at www.tcwcs.co.uk
