King’s Lynn is gearing up for what has become a popular fixture in the running calender.
The ninth annual Bespak Grand East Anglia Run (GEAR) will take place on May 4, starting in the newly-revamped Tuesday Market Place.
As well as the serious business of the 10k race there will once again be a more light hearted Mini-GEAR fun run for youngsters and charity fun runners.
Race director Roger Partridge said: “We had great figures last year, with 1800 taking part in the 10km and 650 in the Mini-GEAR, and we want to build on that this year. There is a huge interest in running, with people taking part in Park Runs and people wanting to keep fit.
“It is a great event for local people and people from further afield. Last year we had a runner from Scotland.”
As part of the race launch organisers were joined by Star Wars characters as the race date coincides with Star Wars Day.
It is hoped that some fun runners will embrace the day by running in costume particularly in the Mini-GEAR race.
Keyvan Djamarani, managing director of race sponsor Bespak, said: “It is an event that I was very impressed by.
“The whole of the town gets engulfed by it, you have people of all ages taking part. It is brilliant for King’s Lynn. The mini-GEAR is particularly good as it encourages children to get involved in exercise at an early age which is good for their future.”
The Bespak GEAR is a UK Athletics and British Association of Road Runners gold-graded event.
The cost of entry is £17 for affiliated runners and £19 for unaffiliated runners. To enter, runners must be aged 15 or over on race day. The Bespak Mini GEAR 1.2km fun run is open to anyone over six years of age. The cost of entry for Bespak Mini GEAR is £6 for adults, £5 for under-16s and £4 for under-8s.
