Ever wondered which type of beer goes best with your evening meal? Pondered over whether an English bitter or a fruit beer would work better with your steak? Or agonised over whether to go with lager or real ale with your bangers and mash?
An event next week in Norwich will seek to help you as it takes ale lovers on a beer-tasting journey of discovery.
The evening is set to take place at Ketts Tavern, on Ketts Hill, on Friday, September 14, from 8pm to 10pm.
Dawn Hopkins, landlady at the pub and owner of the Norwich Bear Brewing Company, says: “We’re taking people on a little beer journey looking at the different styles of beer, from traditional English best bitters and English real ales through to some European lagers and even something slightly different like some fruit beers – something that will challenge your tastebuds.”
The beer tasting will include a selection of ales from the landlord and landlady’s own brews. The owners of the Norwich Bear Brewing Company make a wide range of beers from the Classic, a 3.8pc beer with a light, refreshing “hoppy” taste, to the limited edition New Season.
But Dawn and Jennifer Nicholls, the former owner of Northcote Ales, who will join her to lead the event, do not want the evening to just be about the beers.
They will also show customers how to match their ales with a selection of local food provided by Bray’s Cottage, Norfolk Deli and Pye Baker.
“We want to give people an insight into how wonderful a pairing beer and food can be. It can really, really enhance it,” says Dawn, who also runs The Rose Inn with husband Kevin. “If you pair a porter with a lovely chocolatey dessert, it makes the taste so much better.”
The first allocation of tickets for next Friday’s beer tasting event have already sold out but more may be made available. Call 01603 449654 to find out.
