When Samantha Hicks and her partner went to watch Julian Clary on stage at Norwich Theatre Royal little did she know that they too were to be the stars of the show.
For unbeknown to Samantha, her partner Bonnie Wood had arranged with the production company to pop the big question during the October 7 show which also included the comedian himself “marrying” one of the audience members.
However, Samantha, a 26-year-old laboratory support team manager, said she had an inkling something strange was going on because Bonnie had hinted they should dress up for the occasion.
She said: “I could kind of tell something was up because Bonnie was incredibly nervous and I though you cannot be that nervous about watching a show. Just towards the end of the show Julian Clary asked about a Bonnie and Samantha in the audience, and we went up on stage, and he gave Bonnie the microphone.
“She blurted the question out because she was so nervous. She grabbed the microphone and said “will you marry me?” and I obviously said yes, and then everyone applauded and we both gave Julian a hug. It just happened so quickly.”
Samantha added: “When he called us up, I was like, “oh my god, I’m on stage with Julian Clary” and I could see a sea of faces looking at us. It just went so quickly. It was such a blur.”
Thirty-year-old Bonnie, a self-employed taxidermist, said she came up with the idea for the proposal because she wanted to do something unusual and the couple were both fans of Julian Clary.
She said she had contacted the production company in advance and found out about a month beforehand that she may be allowed to propose during the show, although she wasn’t sure exactly when during the performance.
“Throughout the whole thing I was incredibly nervous, not knowing what was going to happen and when,” she said.
“It was an incredibly surreal moment. I forgot to go on one knee and give Samantha the ring because I was so nervous and a little bit star-struck. I just remembered to ask the question!”
The couple were also invited to meet Julian Clary backstage afterwards and had their picture taken with him.
“He was such a nice guy, really lovely and genuine,” said Samantha.
The couple, who are celebrating their six-year anniversary on Halloween and live near Chapelfield Gardens in Norwich, are now saving up for their ceremony. Samantha said that, like the proposal, it was likely to be quite an unusual and non-traditional occasion.
