A POST office service is to return to an area of Beccles.
Two months ago a counter service was lost in the Rigbourne Hill area of the town, but this week it was revealed that a new service is to be opened.
Chet Stores, at the top of Rigbourne Hill, is to open a Post Office Local service which will allow local people to use many of the services they valued so highly from the former counter service at the nearby East of England Co-operative Society shop.
Mark Sison, who owns to the store, said he hopes to be able to offer banking, bill payments, financial, postal, telephony, government, travel and paystation services from his store before Christmas, however it might not be until the new year.
Mr Sison, 43, said: “I think it is something the area does need. The amount of customers that were not very happy about the other one going were so high that when the Post Office approached I was more than happy to provide this.”
Two separate campaigns ran earlier this year to try to save the post office counter service in the Co-op store, in Swines Green. The store is still open but the post office service itself was taken away despite hundreds backing the campaigns.
However, Beccles mayor Graham Catchpole said he was delighted to say that a service would be returning to that part of the town after a lot of hard work between the town council and the Post Office.
In Chet Stores the services will be offered from a separate till, with existing members of staff able to serve customers.
Mr Catchpole said: “The big advantage is that it will be open as long as the shop is so it will be available seven days a week.
“It is a lifeline for this area of the town,” he said.
When open the Post Office Local service will be available 6.30am to 8pm Monday to Saturday, and 6.30an to 4pm on Sundays.
Mr Sison’s family have run stores in Beccles and Chegrave for more than 17 years, and he said he hoped the service would be a boost to the independent store.
