Jobs are at risk at a Wisbech factory after a fresh fruit processing and packaging company lost a major order.
Del Monte of Weasenham Lane employs 260 people but the company has declined to say how many of these are at risk.
A spokesman confirmed the company had entered a 30 day consultation period with affected workers and this ends on October 17. After that the company is expected to announce the number of employees it may have to shed.
The spokesman said they were currently “reviewing the whole business” and was not able to comment further on the outcome.
The Weasenham Lane-based facility is a fresh-cut or prepared fruit facility where bags or pots are filled with apple slices, fruit salads, melon slices, and exotic mixes and so on.
Del Monte (UK) Ltd has operating units also in Boston, Lincs, and York and with a head office in Staines, Middlesex. It was formerly known as Del Monte Fresh Produce (UK) Ltd. and changed its name Del Monte (UK) Ltd in October 2008.
