Crowds of well-wishers lined the promenade to watch the traditional carnival queen crowning ceremony on the pier forecourt.

It was a beautiful day as the stars of the Cromer Pier Show, Phil Butler and James Bustar crowned Phoebe Chambers, 18, who arrived in an open-top car before taking her position as Miss Cromer on a golden throne.

She was joined by Senior Attendant Victoria Craske, Junior Attendants Summer Rivett and Paige Lewis, and the Carnival Prince and Princess, Connor Reynolds and Isla Harwood, who all arrived in separate chauffeur driven vehicles.

Phoebe, who works as a lifeguard at Victory swimming pool in North Walsham, said: “It’s amazing - a dream come true. I have grown up in Cromer and always spent summers here, so I remember each year’s carnival queen. I’m looking forward to the year and doing as much as possible.”

The Chambers family runs Brisbane antiques shop in Prince of Wales Road, Cromer and Phoebe’s mother Kim Chambers said: “I’m so proud of her. It’s something she wanted to do, and it’s all her own work. She did a lot doing the carnival’s children’s week. She’s not an overly confident girl, so it’s a great boost for her.”

She was cheered on by her sister Nina Chambers, 17, and her best friend, Daisy Campbell, 18.

Prior to their arrival, the pier show stars entertained the crowd with juggling acts, with the help of Joanna Raby, from Cromer. Known as ‘Front Row Jo’, because she’s attended every year of the Cromer show since 1996, she said: “I was a bit nervous but it was okay.”

The Cromer Carnival, which started on Saturday, August 12 and ends on Friday, August 18, is run by volunteers, and a packed programme of events has been lined up for this year’s event.

On Saturday, Norfolk Dog Training Society wowed crowds and demo organiser Pauline Richardson said: “It went really well and we had a good crowd. This is the first time we’ve been at the carnival. We had about 30 dogs taking part, of all shapes and sizes and different breeds.”
