Ali Dent gave his wife Linda an unusual Valentine’s gift – a heart-shaped spud.

Last night he said he found the romantic root in his butcher’s shop in Hilgay, near Downham Market. “I was brushing up and having a good old sweep around,” he said. “When I went under the vegetable rack there was something there and when I pulled it out it was a potato shaped like a heart.”

Mr Dent, 55, quickly saw the possibilities, with February 14 fast approaching. “Saves me buying flowers,” he said. But he added Mrs Dent, 52, begged to differ. “She said, ‘What’s that – is that all you can give me..?’”
