The listed status of an Art Deco derelict seaside Great Yarmouth pub has been confirmed after an appeal by its owners was rejected.
The Iron Duke, which opened in 1940, has kept its newly acquired Grade II status following a review of an appeal from Bourne Leisure, which was scrutinised by a minister of state at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
The review said the secretary of state “concludes that the Iron Duke Public House is of special architectural or historic interest in a national context and therefore should remain on the statutory list”.
Norfolk County Council has been in discussions with the landowners about a possible landswap linked to an Alderman Swindell Primary North Denes Primary Schools merger and had raised concerns over the listed status.
Caroline Jones, from a save the Iron Duke campaign, said: “We are very pleased with the decision and now look to the future and the restoration of this glorious building.”
