Meet the Dereham motorbike enthusiasts who are set to embark on an amazing challenge to ride 3,000 miles in 12 days across Vietnam - and get one up on the Top Gear team.

The three firefighters, builder, plumber and electrician aim to raise £10,000 for MacMillan Cancer Support and Cancer Research UK from the “Long Way Up” marathon next July.

They will spend around 12 hours a day on the bikes and are likely to have to endure monsoon rainfalls, soaring temperatures and up to 100pc humidity.

Jay Spalding was the driving force for the fund-raising epic and was inspired after seeing the BBC TV show trio ride on the Vietman coast road.

He brought in Chris Welling, Adrian Drew, Mark Brewster, Neil Powell and Stuart Baxter to form the team and said the challenge had to be tougher.

So the intrepid riders will follow the old Ho Chi Minh trail, which was cut in during the second world war, for the majority of their journey.

Jungles, large ravines and century-old rickety bridges will be among the range of obstacles in their way after they buy old motorbikes in Saigon and head to Hannoi.

“We will not be taking the direct route - hence the name Long Way Up. We are going to really enjoy it but it will be hard work.” said Jay.

The men will pay for all their own travelling expenses, so every penny raised will go to the charities.

Chris said: “It is not a jaunt and it is going to be tough. But we all ride bikes and enjoy it and it will be the experience of a lifetime. One in four people are affected by cancer and we all know someone with it and so we wanted to give something back and raise money.”

Anyone willing to sponsor the team can ring Jay on 07876 773266 or e-mail

A Facebook group is going to be set up and a website giving page, where people can pledge support.
