Forty-one community groups across the county have received a pre-Christmas boost after winning a slice of 2m.

Town and parish councils, sports clubs, sea scouts, clergy and heritage groups are celebrating after they were awarded a chunk of cash from Norfolk County Council's Community Construction Fund.

Out of the 3.5m available, just over 2m was allocated to help the groups get their project off the ground.

Projects include refurbishing village halls, building new community centres, tranforming sports facilities and installing a church extension.

The fund was created from an underspend in the County Hall budget and each 'shovel-ready' project was sponsored by a county councillor.

Grants from 100 to 100,000 were made available to kick-start a wide range of schemes and stimulate the local economy.

Now, another funding round is opening.

Bill Borrett, deputy leader of Norfolk County Council, said: 'It is fantastic news that the county council still has enough funding to support even more groups in the new year so they can provide new or improved facilities to their communities.

'The funding is hugely important to them as it will hopefully boost community activity within those Norfolk towns and villages.'

The application process will once again be coordinated by the Norfolk Community Foundation. Applications open on Wednesday, January 9, and close on Thursday, February 14.
