An inquest has been opened into the death of a teenager who drowned at a west Norfolk beauty spot.
Umar Morunkegi Balogun, 16, of Mills Court, Harrow Green, London, was one of two people to die while swimming at Bawsey Pits near King’s Lynn on July 16.
Norfolk coroner William Armstrong yesterday opened and adjourned the inquest in Norwich.
He said: “The brief circumstances are that he was apparently under the care of an organisation from Waltham Forest on July 16, when he was taken to Bawsey Pits, near King’s Lynn, a disused sand quarry with public access.
“He went into a flooded area and his body was later located in the water and retrieved.”
A post-mortem confirmed the cause of death as drowning, said Mr Armstrong.
In a separate tragedy on the same day, 41-year-old Ryan Pettengell, of Railway Road, King’s Lynn, also drowned. The site’s owners have since closed the site to the public to stop people swimming in the water.
