Mandy Harrison’s local produce has earned her a host of international awards - with the latest competition winning her an impressive four gold and five silver accolades.
Mandy’s Famous Pickles, based in Geldeston, near Beccles, made such an statement at the World’s Original Marmalade Awards it has attracted the attention of a world-renowned department store, which has asked to stock one of her marmalades.
Representatives from Fortnum and Mason, who are sponsors of the awards, were so taken with the Mandymite marmalade that 200 jars are now on the shelves inside the iconic London shop.
The recipe uses the flavours of oranges, lemons and yeast extract.
This new venture is particularly poignant for Mrs Harrison who watched her tackroom at her home at Dunburgh Farm go up in flames in November 2010, before tragically losing her husband Paul to a brain tumour in December 2011.
Before Mr Harrison died he suggested his wife should create a kitchen for her pickle business and after much hard work it opened in July 2012.
She said: “Fortnum and Mason are very happy with the Mandymite, it’s only me working here and I make every single jar that is going into the store. It’s Fortnum and Mason now, maybe it’s the Queen next.
“I work hard every day and I have done everything that I can. I’ve been through such a hard battle losing my husband and through the fire and things are finally coming together, it’s absolutely amazing.
“Life is very short and you have to grab everything with both hands.”
Dunburgh Farm is a Natural England Site of Special Scientific Interest and Mrs Harrison continues to run that and the farm shop, as well as making 385 varieties of mustards, marmalades, chutneys and pickles.
This year’s World Original Marmalade Awards won her gold awards for the Mandymite marmalade alongside other flavours - orange and passionfruit, great fruits and ginger and mixed citrus.
The awards attract entries from all over the world, including China, Australia and America.
