For one Norwich City season-ticket holder, the decision to give it up to a Manchester United-supporting colleague backfired.

Norwich South MP Simon Wright is still battling to overcome illness – and decided against spending two hours outside on a chilly Saturday evening watching the Canaries in a bid to aid his recovery.

But a bunged-up Mr Wright yesterday told of his anguish at missing a magical night at Carrow Road.

He said: “If you can believe it, I gave my season-ticket to one of my staff, who is a Manchester United fan. I could not believe I missed such an extraordinary game. I listened to it on the radio. My staff member has gone oddly quiet.”

Mr Wright said he wanted to shout when Anthony Pilkington scored for City, but he had lost his voice.

He said: “I certainly leapt in the air. It’s tremendous for the city. Since we’ve been in the Premier League it’s given a real lift to the profile of Norwich.

“When you see your team as one of the main stories in the sports reports in the Sunday newspapers and dominating the pages it gives you a real buzz, and the whole city and county can be very, very proud of the enormous success of our team over recent years. We’ve had some amazing results already this season.

“It’s quite difficult to believe we would have been in this situation three or four years ago. It’s absolutely incredible.”
