The theme will be ‘heroes’, and in a twist on traditional carnival processions, there will be no carnival king or queen but a community hero as the event’s figurehead.

Kick Start Fakenham is organising the event, as part of the second annual Fakenham Fair, on August 27, and has already held its first meeting about it.

The group is now asking for people to nominate community heroes to lead the procession.

Graham Peel, from Kick Start Fakenham said: “We are simply looking for an individual or somebody who could represent a group that has done something positive to help their community.

“It doesn’t have to be someone who has saved lives or built a hospital or a school but simply somebody who has done some good to benefit their community who deserves public recognition.”

Carnivals in Fakenham in the 1980s were known to bring the town to a standstill but the Fakenham Fair, held at Millennium Park last August, was the first carnival-type event to be held in the town for more than 20 years.

Millennium Park will again host the fair. The procession is to go through Fakenham town centre but the specific route has not yet been confirmed.

Many of the events from last year are expected to feature which included magic shows, classic car demonstrations, sports taster sessions, a five-a-side football tournament, music, Punch and Judy, dancers, trampolines, a bouncy castle and trade stands.

Mr Peel said: “We thought last year’s Fakenham Fair was a big success but there was also some constructive criticism about what could have been done better. It’s been said that we could have done more with the main arena and had a bit more diversity with the activities. We will take this all on board as we plan for this year’s event.”

Anyone can nominate a community hero for the carnival procession by contacting Kick Start Fakenham through their Facebook page, emailing kickstartfakenham@hotmail.co.uk, going to the Sweets ‘N’ Things shop or attending one of the group’s forthcoming meetings at Fakenham Community Centre at 7pm on February 9 and February 21.
