Hugh Poths was born in Singapore in October 1920 and died on July 16 this year at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (N&N) following a short illness

His funeral service was held at St Peter’s Church in Sheringham on August 15 and the family asked for donations to be given to Help for Heroes.

Since the service a total of £217.28p has been raised for the forces charity in his memory.

Mr Poths moved to England when he was seven years old and was educated at the Knoll Prep School in Sandy, Bedfordshire, before joining his elder brother, Jack, at King’s School, Worcester.

At the beginning of the second world war he was accepted as a cadet into the Territorial Army and, following in his father’s footsteps, he trained to become a gunner spending months training at Weybourne.

Prior to his 21st birthday he volunteered for active duty overseas and his military career saw him serve in many countries around the world including Africa, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Syria, Gibraltar, Italy, France and Germany.

Then in 1945-1946 he worked for the United Nations, near Russia, as acting captain helping to relocate people liberated from German work camps.

After a period of farming in East Anglia Mr Poths moved with his family to Cley during 1963 and eventually settled in Sheringham 37 years ago.

His hobbies included boating and one of his favourite pastimes was laying his boat in a creek off Blakeney, Wells or Stiffkey and spending a few days living on it and walking on the beaches.

At 88 years old he embarked, with one of his grandsons, on a tour of remembrance in Europe and travelled through the fields of poppies where his father had fought during the first world war.

He also visited his aunt’s former home in Switzerland and surviving relatives in Poland - a journey he had wanted to make for many years.

Family and friends, including Mr Poths’ children and grandchildren, gathered for the funeral.
