A “huge push” is being called for to ensure that Sheringham makes the most of its long-awaited new community centre.

After a series of delays, the Holway Road centre, funded by Tesco and owned by Norfolk County Council, is shortly set to be handed over to Sheringham Town Council.

The council has secured a £100,000 loan towards the £173,000 purchase price, and recently agreed at a public meeting to move its office there from its long-term base at the Town Hall on St Peter’s Road.

The council is also set to employ a third member of staff, with the task of managing and making the most of the centre.

At a recent meeting, town mayor Doug Smith said: “I’m hoping that by the next full council, we will be able to approve all the legal documents with the county council. It’s going to be an incredibly busy time.

“Whoever we appoint as the third member of our office staff to make the community centre work, I will happily work closely alongside them.

“The critical time will be the first month to six weeks. We will need to have a huge push to get hundreds and hundreds of people through the front door to view the building and get excited about using it in the future.”

The centre is replacing the existing facility on Cromer Road, which will be demolished along with the Lockerbie flats and the old fire station to make way for a Tesco store.

  • What does it have in it? Is it Sheringham's answer to the Atrium?

  • I am sure it will be a success. From the outside it looks great and I will certainly use it if there are events organised which interest me.
