Crews were called to the fire on Mousehold Lane, opposite the Rishi restaurant, at 7.35am today.

Smoke could be seen billowing from the two storey building and at its height six fire engines were at the scene.

An aerial ladder platform was also used and Simon Mason, group manager for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, said everybody had been accounted for and the fire had been contained to a loft space.

He said: 'The fire was in the roof space of a loft on the right hand side of a block of four flats.

'It's confined to that space and by attacking it quickly we have put out the flames.

'We're now checking it for hotspots and then we'll scale back and the investigators will look into how it started.'

Mr Mason said there was smoke and water damage in the flat below and some smoke damage in the loft space to the left of where the fire was.

He said: 'The first crews at the scene were met by the occupant and the others in the flats were evacuated.

'Everybody is accounted for and there have not been any injuries.'

One woman who lives nearby said: 'I looked out of my window and saw black smoke and thought it was a bonfire.

'It took hold quickly, but I'm glad to hear everybody is okay.'

Police were also in attendance to help with traffic control and there were long queues in the area.

The incident was scaled back after the flames were put out. The final appliance left the scene at just before 1.30pm.
