The fire brigade were called out to rescue Connie after she slipped in Wiggenhall near King's Lynn on Friday morning.

It took a crew four hours to free her from the ditch, which was full of mud and brambles.

Norfolk Fire Group Manager Tim Edwards: 'At some point early on Friday morning a horse fell into a dyke full of brambles and was well wrapped up in them.

'Because of the stress she took some time to recover and it was worrying.

'When you've invested time and effort into recovering a horse, the last thing you want to see is the animal suffering.'

A vet was called to sedate the horse and allow the fire brigade to lift her out with the help of a top loader.

Mr Edwards said: 'We get a fair amount of animal rescues – cows, sheep and all sorts who have got themselves into trouble.

'The horses have been in this field for years with no problems, but we've spoken to her owner and Connie is up and about again now.'
