Homes have been flooded with eight inches of water after a burst water main in Mildenhall.

Other homes in the Suffolk town have been warned they may be left without water at all while Anglian Water engineers work to repair damaged sections of the pipe, which left about 10 homes in Downing Close flooded.

A specialist clean-up team from Anglian Water is currently helping to clear up the mess caused.

Livinia Novell got a call from her son at around 7.30am to say his home was flooding.

'We went over to help him out and the fire engines were there pumping water out of the houses,' she said.

'We paddled through the water but we couldn't get to the front door because it was so high. We went round the back and half the garden was covered.'

Mrs Novell then took her two grandchildren back to her home in Brandon.

A Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service spokesman confirmed there were about 10 homes affected and that there was about eight inches of water in the properties.

Two fire engines, one from Newmarket and one from Mildenhall, attended and spent three hours getting the incident under control.

They were due to leave shortly after midday.

An Anglian Water spokesman said: 'We are very sorry for the flooding caused by the burst water main in Downing Close.

'Our specialist clean-up team has arrived at Downing Close and will be working with the residents who have been affected to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.

'Customers in Mildenhall may be experiencing low water pressure or no water at all while our engineers work to repair the damaged section of pipe. We are sorry for any inconvenience this causes.

'Customers can keep up to date on the repair and find out more by visiting www.anglianwater.co.uk/yourarea

'Once the water supply is restored customers may notice the water looks a little cloudy, or even white when they first turn on their taps.

'This is nothing to worry about - it's just millions of tiny air bubbles which causes the water to look cloudy. If you run the tap for a few minutes, or if you leave it to stand in a glass, it should clear.'
