The Coach and Horses in Bethel Street is under temporary management and will only be open on evenings and weekends until new tenants can be found.

Owners Greene King say that once new tenants are found, they will invest significantly in a “major redevelopment” of the pub.

It is currently listed for lease on the company’s website, which says the pub serves lunch and the pre-theatre crowd “but there is plenty of scope for improvement”.

A Greene King spokesman said: “The current tenants of the Coach and Horses have decided to focus on their other business and will be leaving the pub in March.

“The pub is currently open on evenings and weekends and while we recruit a new tenant, the pub will remain open, under temporary management.

“Once an agreement has been signed with new tenants, we are looking to invest a significant sum into the pub and carry out a major redevelopment.”

The pub is one of the oldest in the city, with a stone in the wall marked with the year 1710. However, parts of the building are believed to date back as far as 1200.

A parish marker on the outside states the pub is between the parishes of St Peter Mancroft and St Giles was the site of the Ascension tradition of ‘beating the bounds’, where choirboys were ‘bumped and dusked’ at their parish boundaries to remind them where they were.
