Herbie Burton and George Bushell have lived in Great Witchingham all their lives.

So when the childhood friends heard villagers wanted a way to walk safely on to a public footpath they decided to give something back.

Now the picturesque path off Heath Lane in the village has handrails to ensure walkers can walk through the meadow.

Mr Burton, 79, said the idea came after a parish council meeting which made him determined to get the job done.

Contacting his life-long friend Mr Bushell, 72, who worked in the building trade, the pair got to work to help their community.

“This village has been good to me and I wanted to give something back,” Mr Burton, a former lorry driver and now parish councillor, said.

“When I heard the village needed something doing, I just said ‘leave it with me’.

“The handrails are for the people to get up and down off the road.”
