A meningitis survivor from Mile Cross has received a charitable donation from a generous national supermarket.

Grace Matthews, aged just five, contracted the disease two years ago. She lost both her legs below the knee, as well as all of her fingers, half the thumb on her left hand and half the palm on her right hand.

Miss Matthews recived 2,500 from Asda in Hellesdon as part of the supermarket's nationwide initiative Chosen By You, Given By Us.

The scheme is designed to give support to local charities and is run by every Asda store in the UK.

Grace was presented with the cheque in Hellesdon, having received the most votes from customers on the store's Community Life Board.

Grace's mum, Vicky, said: 'Grace and I would just like to say a big thank you from the whole family to Asda and the people of Norwich for giving so generously. We really can't thank them enough for what they've done – we just want to say a massive thanks to everybody from all of us.

'The money raised is a massive contribution towards funding the through-floor lift for Grace at home, so she can easily access her bedroom and downstairs.'

Three charities are featured on the supermarket's board and customers can vote which three they would like to donate to. Photo: Denise Bradley
